Design Agency Life: Celebrating Superpowers

Our unique mix of people shapes the design agency we are, and so in this series of Thoughts pieces we give you an insight into the unique and individual talents you’ll find at Design Activity!

Here we’re talking with our Office Manager Liz.

What was your first job?

When I was at sixth form college, I worked for a couple of months at the Bierkeller in Bristol, a music venue that had an impressive gig history, even Nirvana played there in 1991!

I remember leaving work at 4am one morning with a couple of colleagues and heading to the centre to get the night bus home….we ended up passing a guy who was stood by the  church just up from Nelson Street at the time, and he asked us what our thoughts would be if someone were to graffiti on a church….we had a mini debate and a laugh about it – the moral implications! (I was studying philosophy and religious studies at college) we were all pretty buzzed from work at the time wished him a good night and then headed home.

It wasn’t until I was on the bus home that I really thought about it…

The guy had had a wheeled aluminium case with him that had paint marks on it, and there was a taxi parked on the pavement with the door open and what was clearly a security guy waiting for him. I may well have met Banksy!

What inspires you?

I’ve always been fascinated by light, ever since I was a kid. The shadows created when the sun shines through leaves, stars at night, rainbows and lightening.

We used to holiday on the Isle of Wight every summer and visit Blackgang Chine an adventure and fairy-tale themed amusement park.  The park would open later in the summer and when it got dark all the trees and bushes in the landscaped gardens would be lit up with colourful lights to make it look magical. I’ve loved light ever since. I love photography too, the word itself comes from Greek roots and means ‘drawing with light’.

If you didn’t have to sleep what would you do with the extra time?

I’ve always been creative, making gifts and cards for people, doing jewellery commissions, working on tattoo designs for friends or organising themed events, so it would be a combination of that. Over the past few years I’ve gotten more into costume making for festivals like Boomtown Fair. Everything from Mad Maxx style post-apocalyptic survivor costumes to Cyber Vikings and fairy costumes – the glitter, jewel and pearl incrusted mermaid outfit I made for 3 Wishes Festival in 2018 was a big hit!

What’s the best way to start the day?

Cuddles with my dog Basil!

He’s all warm and sleepy and very affectionate first thing, so he loves to have cuddles on the sofa before he has his breakfast and a walk.

I like it when it’s quiet, when the sun is coming up and the mist is hanging over the river in Bath.  It’s a great way to start the day.

Follow that with a coffee and I’m good to go!
